Hiker’s paradies Krk

LAGE

The island of Krk is located in Kvarner Bay, in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the largest Adriatic islands and connected to mainland Europe by a bridge.

On the southwest coast of the island of Krk lie the villages of Punat and Stara Baška, from where pastoral trails lead to the highest mountain peaks of the island of Krk: Veli Hlam (482 m), Zmina (537 m), Veli Vrh (541 m), Brestovica (558 m) und Obzovo (568 m).

LANDSCHAFT

along the footpaths we find endless rows of dry stone walls, gardens, vineyards and paths bordered by dry stone walls, shepherds’ shelters, rainwater reservoirs and sheep enclosures of dry stone walls, karstic hollows, crags and mountain pastures with sheep herds.
Maybe a deer, rabbit or fox will come across us.
Also here are many species of birds at home, of which the griffon vulture is under protection. Apart from grasshoppers, numerous butterflies, lizards and frogs, even a snake can cross our path.

AUSGANGSPUNKTE FÜR DIE WANDERUNGEN

In Punat we have 3 starting points: Prgon (on the bypass road under the water reservoir), Ricomp (at the inn „K’Ribaru“ or at the cemetery), Za Rimon (on the street near the hunting lodge), as well as two so-called walking paths: Prgon-Kanajt (over the harbor), Punta debij-Camp „Konobe“ (near the sea).
In Stara Baška are 3 starting points: one to Punat and two to Batomalj. In Draga Bašćanska we have a starting point at the chapel next to the road, one in Jurandvor and Batomalj and one from the Treskavac hill.

NOTES & WAY MARKINGS

At the starting points are boards with information about the direction and duration of the hiking time appropriate. Along the trails there are markings in the rocks in the form of small flags in the size of 15 x 10 cm and in the colors red-white (predominantly), blue-white and green-white. The markings are mounted at intervals of 20 to 50 m. In the case of forked paths, the different directions of movement are carved in a stone.

DURATION OF THE WALK TIME

For a hike to the lower plateaus (250 – 350 m above sea level), it takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, while for the higher plateaus (350 – 500 m above the M.) 1 hour to 2 hours.
The mountain paths and plateaus are rocky; but you also come across grass or earthy soil. Also on top of the peaks are the paths of stone or boulders. Right at the beginning of the ascent and then from the plateaus, one has a view of the lower villages and the sea, while from the mountain peaks one has a view of most of the island of Krk, the Kvarner islands and the mainland. The marked mountain trails are connected with the villages of Punat, Draga Bašćanska, Stara Baska, Batomalj, Jurandvor and Baška.
